To help keep you motivated on the turbo trainer or on those long, dark, cold training rides Niall Frost spoke to a cross section of the racing community and asked them 10 simple questions - TEN UNDER THE PEN...

Name:
Beth Crumpton

Team/Club:
Halesowen A&CC

Category:
Junior

2011 bike:
Scott Scale 20

2011 results:
Junior National XC Champion, 33rd World Championships, 22nd European Championships, 4th Dalby World Cup, 11th Offenburg World Cup, Belgian Belgacom MTB Grandprix in Geraardsbergen 1st.

Short Bio:
I was Juvenile XC National Champion in 2008, having started to race mountain bikes in the same year. I've been riding my bike since I was 10 and before I mountain biked I did road, track and also cyclo- cross, winning silver at National Cyclo- Cross Championships 3 times.
I used to play tennis, swim, run and do gymnastics and I love cake baking! I'm currently studying at college doing a BTEC level 3 in Sports Performance and Excellence at Henley-in-Arden College and I have a part time job at a local chippy!
In 2012 I'm on the Olympic Development Programme and racing for Team Scott Contessa MTB Team and Team Scott Contessa Epic on the road. I hope to retain my National XC title, and get selected for the World Cups and aim to improve at the World championships if selected.

Questions:

First race experience?
Criterium in a big circle at Leamington Spa, I was Under 12.

What's the funniest thing a spectator has shouted at you?
Once my two best friends came to spectate for me and they made up a can-can/ cheerleader chant at me, I can't quite remember what they were saying but I remember laughing as I raced by!

Favourite motivational tune?
Pendulum- Islands ( I always warm up to this!)

What do you look forward to most at the end of a race?
A lovely warm home cooked meal, most of the time a Roast dinner!

Toughest competitor you've raced against?
Last season in the youth category Alice Barnes was good to race against! In cyclo-cross, there's a good number of people who I battle it out with Lucy Garner, Amy Roberts, Hannah Payton. I like good competition, it pushes you more!

Favourite race course?
Offenburg World Cup Course is mega!

What's the best bit of advice you've been given?
"You can never go into a race with a full race plan, because majority of the time this will never go to plan, just act on what's happening and react"

Best bit of kit or training aid ever bought?
My Scott Scale 20! Going to miss racing on it next year, although I'm greatly looking forward to my 2012 Scott bikes.

29 or 26?
26, although I'd love to try a 29er

Gentle recovery or aggressive rest?
Gentle! Feet up, being lazy and sleeping, nothing better.
