To help keep you motivated on the turbo trainer or on those long, dark, cold training rides Niall Frost spoke to a cross section of the racing community and asked them 10 simple questions - TEN UNDER THE PEN...

Name:
Dave Buchanan

Team/Club:
Santa Cruz/The North Face/Loco Tuning

Category:
Vets, but don't tell anyone [Ed - too late for that..]

2011 bike:
Santa Cruz Blur XC

2011 results:
Guinness World Record Holder, "The Greatest Distance Achieved on a Mountain Bike in 48hrs." Strangely, I couldn't race after that.

Bio:
Loves a challenge, especially if people question its possibility.
First Alpine Sub-24hr Welsh Coast to Coast Winter 2009.
Rode "The Hobbit'sTale" (Welsh Coast to Coast double) 721Km, 22300m ascent. My body is only just recovering and My right thumb and arm is still numb.

Background:
Started racing in 2005 after entering a race whilst high on life (Red wine, actually) followed by various decent finishes and podiums at 12 and 24hr solo races.  When not riding I provide Orthotics Consultancy via Otto Bock's Academy.  I'm the only guy in the UK that does what I do, so I'm pretty busy.

Hobbies would be watching films and arguing about which one to watch with Jo, walking my dogs and running.
I'm from Wales, which is generally known as, "The King of mountain biking country".
In 2012 will see me hit a few races and do another Big Ride for charity.

Questions:

1. First race experience?
Clic 24 2005. It's not really a race, but it was one of the toughest things I'd ever done. So I entered it again: the first 24 is a bit of a shocker.

2. What's the funniest thing a spectator has shouted at you?
Ant White, "Get back on the bike, mate, you'll be glad you kept going." I ended up in hospital with a dicky heart and no salt in my body.

3. Favourite motivational tune?
I like any type of Trance music as it stops me getting too excited or, being an 80's teen, Frankie and "Relax".

4. What do you look forward to most at the end of a race?
The end of the race.

5. Toughest competitor you've raced against?
Myself, on The Hobbit's Tale; I was my own worst enemy; but otherwise it's all of them!!

6. Favourite race course?
Bontrager 24/12. Great fun.

7. What's the best bit of advice you've been given?
Never get off the bike in the pit and also to try a liquid diet whilst racing (great advice).

8. Best bit of kit or training aid ever bought?
Chris Eatough coaching made me mentally solid and a liquid racing diet has stopped stomach ulcers recurring.

9. 29 or 26?
I've been on 26 to date but ask me about 29 next year.

10. Gentle recovery or aggressive rest?
Telly and time with my partner, Jo. Apparently I need someone to whinge to.
