Mt Zoom Titanium Gripper Cage
Published: 15th August, 2011I am not known for being particularly easy on lightweight kit. This year has seen nearly as many back wheels as month’s passed, not to mentioned two frames, slashed tyres, broken chains and mechs. For this reason I usually err on the side of durability rather than lightweight when choosing kit for my bikes. (Maybe I should err on the side of losing weight, but that’s a whole other discussion).
In the past this has seen me resort to the “old skool” Topeak cages, plastic cages from Elite and Specialized without finding the right balance of bottle retention and strength. For this reason I was somewhat unsure about running a titanium cage that weights just 25g! I should not have worried as the Mt Zoom cage has been amazing. I have not dropped a bottle over the many race courses and Lakeland descents this year and it is still going strong.
My understanding of why the design is successful is in its simplicity. It features a significant lack of welds which, as those who appreciate titanium know is the material’s weakness. Titanium is also an extremely flexible metal which helps secure the bottle tightly despite the minimal design. If I were to point out a misgiving it would be the graphics, albeit understated I think are unnecessary and don’t bring anything to the overall look of the product. The design is distinctive enough that in my opinion the branding should be left off for a cleaner look.
In conclusion the only reason I’ve purchased two this year is to double up capacity for the Isle of Man End 2End. The price ain’t bad either...
