With the influence of SPOTY (Sports Personality of the Year) winner Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy, 2012 has been an excellent year for British Cycling. It would seem that it has encouraged more people to take to pedal power, with some using cycling to push their bodies through new feats of endurance.

Regularly training on your bike is undoubtedly good fun, however, as you get fitter, you may want to pit your new-found strength, stamina and tenacity against fellow riders as well as the terrain. To allow people to compete there has to be the events for them to do so and that is where organisations such as Rider Coaching and BikePedlars Retford come in. This year, they are running a series of exciting events at a number of venues across South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire throughout the winter that provide challenging competition to both the seasoned club racer and new comers alike to competitive mountain bike racing.

The competition is fierce, the terrain severe and conditions challenging, making the experience even more memorable. With five scheduled rounds within the winter series, each featuring two competition options: a two or four hour enduro race aimed at elite and novice riders.

The forest path terrain at the race venue Clumber Park, is excellent for racing. With less climbing than the other venues, it makes the race a much faster prospect for the competitors as it twists its way through the towering firs with their fallen branches providing natural obstacles along with perhaps some snow and ice!

The race will see an interesting battle fought between the front runners of the 2hr/4hr hour races which will give all the race support crew and observers something to watch and cheer about, and we are all excited to see whether James Ashby will hold his own against his equally fast Dad Paul!

Tea and coffee will be available as will a jet wash so please bring some money for these winter luxuries! There is a charge for entry into National Trust owned Clumber Park (unless you are a National trust member) but this helps support the upkeep of this most amazing venue.

Full update on course conditions on Saturday night.

Please use the Apleyhead Entrance to Clumber signposted from the A614 go down Limetree Avenue, turn next left after about a mile, follow signs down to Parking and Signing on in Hardwick Village.
