First up I need to catch up with my Welsh Champs report. With this year’s race once again on my doorstep in Builth Wells I had a home advantage. I had managed a pre-ride earlier in the week and thought that it was the best course I ever ridden at Forest fields. It had 2 major climbs and 2 main descents, the first descent was a real tester and truly tested your bike handling skills!
It was soon race day and the weather gods were been kind for a change. First up was Hali’s race who despite been half the size of the other girls put in a really good effort and had a great race.

Next up was Mum ( Donna ) who seemed to be having a bit of a bad day but managed to gain back some time and finish first in her Cat.
Finally it was my turn, it was quite a small field but anything can happen on the day. I had a good start and decided to go hard from the start and see if anyone was going to come with me. At the top of the first climb I was in a lot of pain with the effort, but I had managed to gain a 30 meter gap which I was really pleased with. I pushed on hard again attacking the 2nd climb and continued this till the end of the lap, I had gained quite a good gap now and decided to just maintain a good pace and ensure I didn’t make any silly mistakes! To be honest the rest of the race was fairly uneventful allowing me to enjoy the cracking course! As discussed on the day I think it is long over due a national XC visit again!!!!!
I was really pleased to be crowned Welsh Masters Champ and was great to receive the Jersey!
Thanks to John and Fully sussed and team for a great event.
Next up was the Black park XC which incorporates the emergency services champs. I have never done any racing in the black park before so was unsure what to expect.
In the week leading up to the race we were on holiday in Somerset, I spent most of the week recovering from a severe hang over after a friends stag do in Bournmouth! I now know why I don’t drink any more!!
We decided to stay at a travel lodge which was about 5 minutes from the event. On the Saturday Hali and Donna raced, and Hali did her best race yet on a really twisty course and finished in second. Donna also had a great day winning her race.
On the Sunday we arrived at the event with enough time for me to get out and complete a practise. The course was very, very flat and very very twisty! Not a course I generally excel on, but I enjoyed my lap. Definitely need to be concentrating all the way!!

The emergency services race was well attended with a lot of faces I didn’t recognise and a few familiar ones. So I wasn’t sure of the competition. Off the start I went fairly hard wanting to hit the single track near the front, I managed this going into the single track in first place. I pushed on hoping to maybe to get an early gap. After about half a lap I was in first with Sam Humphreys right on my tail, I very nearly had an early finish to my race when I caught my pedal on a stump and how I didn’t end up off the bike I still don’t really know!! I was finding the twisting single track very tough and couldn’t seem to get into any real flow, constantly fighting my bike through every turn. I think Sam was worried about me taking us both out! At the end of the lap we had settled in to a steady pace. I lead for the majority of the next lap then Sam lead for the next lap, by now we had a good gap on the rest of the field. I now realised that it was probably going to be a race between the 2 of us. On lap 5 Sam gave a big kick and managed to get away, I pushed hard to try and pull him back but I was making way to many mistakes and rather than gain back I was losing time! I continued to try and pull it back on the last lap but it just wasn’t happening!
I finished 2nd with Sam a taking a very deserved 1st and the emergency services championship!
A cracking event which I did enjoy despite the lack of hills!
