It’s that time of year again, when for most of us the only chance of a weekday ride is going to involve either the turbo trainer or some serious investment in night lights. Now, I can wax lyrical about the virtues of a turbo trainer but it’s never going to improve your bike handling skills and it does lack a little something in the social skills department. It’s no wonder then bike forums are awash with the question “what bike lights?” So let me tell you a little about a brand I know:

One wet 12 hour night race: it took two bikes, three sets of brake pads, almost all the bearings but the Four4th lights kept going to the end

I have been lucky enough to have been involved with lights manufacturer Four4th for a little over four years now. When I was initially invited to join the Four4th all ladies race team I arrived to race at Mountain Mayhem with a toddler and baby in tow and found a group of people with an ethos very similar to mine; work hard, play hard, and just don’t stress it. Since then, despite moving to the XCracer race team I have been lucky enough for Fourth4th to continue with their support.

Four4th is a UK based manufacturer of LED lights for extreme sports but given owner Del Coppola has spent more time in the saddle than most of us has hot dinners it is not really surprising they have found their niche in mountain biking. The boys at Four4th are engineers by background and are continually striving to provide the perfect night riding light. Every detail has been considered and tested; which LEDs to use, which lens, which fixing mounts, how to make the fixings adjustable, which battery size, how to cope with the new influx of super short stems (as people under 6 foot move to 29ers) and of course the two most important considerations, how to get maximum perceivable light whilst maintaining burn time. In fact, not sure what will fit on your current bike, or what will work with the existing lights…drop in and see them at the workshop in Aldershot with your bike and they will provide a set up right for you.

An impressive array of machining equipment – all the housings are manufactured on site

My current set up is a Green Holy Moses on the bars with a Green Exodus on the lid. At 2900 lumens on the Mo and 1700 lumens on the exodus this is more than enough to light up Blackpool. In fact when racing at night I rarely even use the lights on full power. It’s when you ride in a group and everyone else has their lights on full that you need the power, otherwise all you get is shadow.

For anyone who has not used a green LED before, you really should try it. Despite being a bit of a cynic initially, I have now been converted to the green way of life. And not just because it is easier to tell when your team mate is coming into the pits in an endurance race. They really do seem to improve perception in the dark, so those annoying little stumps, holes and trail obstacles stand out just a little bit clearer than they do in white light.

But it’s not all about mountain biking. Roadies and commuters are not forgotten in the Four4th workshop with a new range of integrated units (the Scorpion and the Scorch), cable free and light weight with amazing brightness, designed to improve cyclist visibility on the road. The touch sensitive lens is incredibly cool and allows the unit to be turned on and off really easily.

As one of the sponsors for the Gorrick events – all trophies provided by Four4th are also machined in their workshop
