It was a simple enough idea, a challenge set by colleague and riding buddy, Rob Lee to ride 1000 miles during the month of April, inspired by Terry Thomas, a time trial rider from the 1950's.  You can learn more by reading Rob's original 1000 mile challenge announcement HERE but the jist of it was to ride 1000 miles during April and to share your experiences, your photographs, your discoveries and your feelings on Morvelo.cc and through Twitter with the #tag #1000miles.

We're halfway through the month and I am currently just below halfway through the miles, the miles aren't coming as easily as I had hoped! My daily commute automatically gives me 20 miles, give or take and I figured it'd be easy to raise that to the necessary average of 33 miles a day with a few extra evening rides and some big ones on rare days off work but it's surprising how much time and energy can be taken away from you by the little things... feeding the cats, mowing the lawn, preparing meals, washing, watching endless episodes of Family Guy and American Dad, etc, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah.  Some days it's not been possible to physically fit in a ride and on others I've simply been too darn tired, as was the case yesterday and has been so today (that's 66 miles I have to catch up on!).

Enough of my seemingly endless whinging though, the miles I've ridden so far have been beautiful.  April 1st was Round 2 of the Fully Sussed Summer series at United Downs and an exciting first 23 miles.  April 2nd was a lot of fun too - I spent the afternoon at Haldon Forrest near Exeter, riding laps of the Red Ridge Trail - for anyone who hasn't visited before (this was my first time there) I'd say it's definitely worth a visit, the trails were fast and flowing though not overly technical, my only advise would be not to go on the first day of school half term.  All my riding since then has been a mix of road and off road commutes and ventures into the Somerset and Dorset countryside on my locals lanes and trails - I've come to really appreciate how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful and peaceful area of the country.

It's not a bad commute :)

Unless you're feeling overly ambitious, it may be a little late to get involved in the #1000miles challenge but you can follow the conversation and all the action by searching #1000miles and @roblee7ds

You can also follow me directly @oliverherdsman to see how I'm getting on and if I make it to #1000miles.

I'll see you out there,
