Alas someone/category has to start the days racing and as much as early starts do not suit you they do suit others, which allows them to get the race done and be back at home with their families or allow them the rest of the day to do other things. There is always the opportunity to race in the age categories races later in the day depending on what age you are. Yes there are some fit riders in the age categories but at least you can still race.IMO if you look at the times of the winners in the various categories it would be better to have categories based on speed not age and then the races would be more competitive with the best riders riding the most laps and all the categories racing against each other,

Cheers Darren-Not sue the plans for Black Park for 2017, after two very successful rounds of the Southern XC series in 2015 and 2016 where we were the only round to give out prizes to complement the organizers trophies we have not been asked to run a round this year so will probably be looking at a stand alone event in the Spring.

A few people asking if this can be entered on the day, its a big yes so see you there on Saturday night!

Anyone wanting a pre view of the course we will be riding around this Tuesday and next Tuesday bedding the new trails in further , if you want to join the fun meet at Go Ape 6:30 p.m. ,

Good to catch up last week Paul, the plan is to be there this Thursday same time and meeting place, 6.30 at Go Ape if anyone else wants to tag along to the training. It looks like hard seesion  worked with three wins for WDMBC/Specialized Concept store riders in the Torq 12 as well as a 3rd place finish.

For those that want a sneaky preview of the course,we will be down at the venue this Thursday for a club session if any guests want to come along we will be meeting at Go Ape at 6.30 p.m.

Thanks for the positive feedback usual categories, open for all cats other than fun, vets and grd vets who have their own races, do see some ringers riding n the fun due to the quality of the prizes so come on guys unless you are fun riders go for the open event.
Going to be doing some training at the venue this Tuesday evening if anyone wants a preview of some of the course.

The course will be similar to this year round of the Southern XC, a couple of different sections as the start is in a different place, right next to the car park and due to safety reasons we have decided that the new deep bomb hole is to technical for a night race.Planning on some day light training, familiarization rides around the circuit in a few weeks time

British Cycling have designated this Sundays Black Park XC race,as  the Central region Mountain Bike Championships for juveniles and youths, so we have been given a set of  BC medals for the first 3 Central BC licence holders  riders  both under  14/ and under 16s both boys and girls, but as yet 1 pre registered youth rider. Got to be a few more youth riders out there who qualify. Some people knock BC for lack of commitment to MTBiking but they have put their hands in their pocket so be nice to see a bit of response back, so spread the word and you never know you could have a shiny new medal around your neck and some good bragging rights..

t would be great to see some races with bigger fields and the top riders from all the age groups battling against each other, the better iyou are in terms of ability should determine the no of laps you do, not your age.

Great course and great race

Just one thing on the number of laps for the kids it is not how far they can ride it is how fast they ride can ride that wins races but as stated before puberty the girls are often faster/stronger than the boys, but why not e-mail the organisers direct if you  have any issues I am sure they will be receptive

Thanks to the SMBC team fora good day in the sunshine

The West Drayton MBC always try and find a different European event every year to ride, and have recently completed in the following, Los Solapo a 100 miles epic based in Cabezon Spain in May which attracts massive fields with some top pros at the sharp end.The Folie Malviennes, a 24hr in Normandy which was on an amazing course which featured single track, a bit of road riding, riding down alleyways between houses,  along cycle paths and around the grounds of a derelict Chateaux, and this year we did the Raid Picardy and one of the prizes won was a live cockerell, this was an 80 km one lap event not to far from Paris. As for next year time to find another new event

We have done a bit of work on the old ski slope to form a track which is good enough for training and is all off road with as you would expect for an old ski slope some elevation. to get some hill work in.
The first week we had 10 people turn up of all abilities and did some fitness training and skills training.
We are hoping to get a few more people down so that we can persuade the council to put some purpose built tracks down.
We will be there again this Thursday and every week from 7 p.m. The meeting place is at the oveflow car park O/S the Hillingdon athletics track, Gatting Way, Uxbridge

A plug for my own event the West Draytons Black Park XC race on March 17th which is not to far down the M40 from you. The cct is flat so no big downhills to worry about but the singe track certainly gets tighter the faster you go.There is a beginners category as well as a fun class and a over 40s vets race but would suggest the vets should be left until you have dipped your toe because most of the over 40s have been racing for many years and are still very much on the fast and competitive side
Feel free to come back with more Q;s  cheers Chris

Later in the year the Exposure Night Race and the Black Park Duathlon will be held on the 19th and 20th October.
As always entry will be soon be available on this site.

Have always thought BC has treated XC racing as a second class sport however what Brian is right about is , is the amount of money xc racing brings into the BC coffers, well attended events like the Gorrick series do not run under BC and thus do not provide any levies towards the kitty.
We at the WDMBC elected to go back under the BC umbrella a few years ago and yes it costs the events a few pounds extra but it is nice to feel that in some small way we are contributing to the success of British Cycling but it would be even better if big Dave B could do the honours and now find us an XC world champion.

The date for next years Spring Black Park MTB event is the 4th March it does clash with the South West Series which is a shame but a fair few miles between the two events so no reason why both won't attract good fields. The event will feature the London Single Speed championships and is also doubling up as the Emergency Services championship.
As always racing for abilities and ages, full details will be on this site by way of a press release as well as on line entry in the near future.Sponsors already on board Bucks off road sportive and Beyond Mountain Bikes. Watch out for more details

Lots of quiet little lanes around the perimeter of the park however and a few pubs and a Tesco Express within a couple of miles if you need to get food.

Night race lots of space currently, Entry on the day accepted

Alas the date is set you will just have to make the Duathlon on the Sunday

Most of the night races are endurance based so it will be intersting to see how a short XC night race goes down.

Black Park for those that don't know is a venue which has hard standing car parking and benefits from all the tracks being well draining and we very rarely get mud at the venue apart from a couple of places which we will try to avoid

Just working on sponsors at the moment but full details will be by way of a press release once we have got this weekends Bucks off road sportive out the way and sorted final distances out!

Just a quick heads up the WDMBC are planning a Halloweeen short cross country night time race on the 29th Oct and an off road duathlon the following day at their local ccct at Black Park. We are wondering about two races one fun lasting 40 mins approx then an open race around the 75 min mark just wondering what people think to short/to long or better to have just one race with prizes for the first vets/ladies/juniors/best fancy dress.

Looking for some feedback

Having parked the car rather than ridden to the cct noticed the car park is now £2.50 although if you win the male S/S prize of a £150 cash don't think your worry too much about that. A couple of people having been asking if you can enter the event on the day, entries will be accepted however we do advise you to get there early to register if you are going to leave it late.
The event is run in a country park who charge £2 to park so don't forget to bring a couple of coins along
42 club riders from the West Drayton the promoting club already entered, can't be many MTB clubs who could get that sort of numbers to ride a race.

A quick update, the course is looking good a few changes from last year it will once again be a flat out affair with little respite for catching your breath.
For those mentally scarred from the 1st round of the Welsh series, the course drains very well, some fire roads but no fields, hard gravel car parking, proper toilets and even a cafe close by.
The bad news for the elites is Jody Crawforth has confirmed he will be back to try and make it two wins on the trot

71

(20 replies, posted in Events)

As stated above the start times are at http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events … ampionship good to see some "names " entering thanks to the profits we have made from the www.bucksoffroadsportive.co.uk enduro event we can afford to put a £150 first prize up for the winner of the S/Speed class , with a similar prize expected for the Elite/expert race depending on entries but be warned you will have to be going well to win with Jody Crawforth taking the honours last year. The S/S race incorparates the London S/S championship which will be won by the first rider to finish who resides inside the M25.

The West Drayton MBC who are sponsored by Beyond Mountain bikes Specialized and RRP are always on the look out for riders to boost their racing team but are specifically looking for two riders at the sharp end of their categories for 2011. Levels of sponsorship will be dependent on potential and/or past racing results- Riders need to be based somewhere in the South to be able to support the club organised races such as the clubs road crits at Hillingdon and their Black Park XC race.

Been down to Bordon designing the course for the 4th round of this great series, having to do a bit of work as a few trees have come down and a bit over grown but with a bit of action with the chainsaw and strimmers we are going to have a great circuit. Conditions are very dry at present which will make for fast racing, all the best bits from recent years will be in with  the usual flowing single track.

West Drayton Mountain Bike Club (WDMBC), one of the UK’s biggest mountain bike clubs, will once again be organizing its annual Black Park XC race on
14 March 2010. Beyond Mountain Bikes in Cranleigh have stepped in as lead sponsor and will be providing prizes for those quick and skilful enough to make the podium.

Chris Denman, former Southern XC champ and WDMBC chairman said, “The Black Park race is a great season opener and will give racers an early indication of how their winter training has gone. As usual we’re planning a short tight twisty singletrack course which requires good bike handling skills and finesse to ride at speed. Having said that, there’s not much in the way of climbing and there will be categories to suit all abilities.”

Race sponsor, Jackie Roberts of Beyond Mountain Bikes in Cranleigh, Surrey said, “The Black Park event is grass roots racing at its best. Whether you are a complete beginner, a weekend warrior or a hardened racer, this event has something for you. This is exactly the sort of event that Beyond Mountain Bikes like to sponsor and we are excited about being involved in 2010.”

In addition to sponsorship from Beyond Mountain Bikes, the Womens’ categories will be supported by Dirt Divas who will be providing vouchers for their excellent skills courses. The online energy and nutrition supplier, The Feed Station, will also be providing a selection of its products as prizes.

In an effort to provide categories for all abilities and ages there will be U10s, U12s, U14s and U16 youth races held in addition to Beginner, Fun, Singlespeed, Open, Vet and Grand Vet categories.

Online entry is available through www.xcracer.com

Anyone fancy a change from cleaning bikes/kit the West Drayton MBC have a session at Calshot indoor velodrome this Sunday 20th Dec 9-12, as it looks like a number of club members are under the thumb and engaged with Xmas shopping there is room for a few guests, price including bike hire will be less than that of most mountain bike races so get in touch if you fancy it, any standard welcome.

1st Prize in the beginners ladies is a Dirt Divas course worth about £90, so who ever wins that once they have had the course will soon be moving up the categories

I would endorse Steves views if you have done quite a bit of riding off-road then the fun would probaly be the best class

The West Drayton MBC who next year have the continued support of Beyond Mountain Bikes and Specialized with the extra support of RRP are looking for some more riders to join their racing team for 2010.all racers are welcome however to benefit from the support of our sponsors idealy riders should be near the pointed end of the sports/junior/youth class , male or female to help the club try and beat this years record of 96 wins. Levels of sponsorship are available dependent on results/potential

Agree that in the ideal world that prizes would not be given out before all the riders had finished but the 2hrs  prizes were given out before the 4hr riders had finished as some of the 2 hr riders wanted to get away and did not want to wait for another 2 hours. I think all the riders bar possibly one had finished the 4hr event before the 4hr prizes were given out . As Gandalf said there was a bit of a time constraint as all the course had to be cleared away before darkness set in and we only just achieved that.Glad you enjoyed the event and hopefully we will put it on again next year  but with better conditions.

Thanks for all the comments about the races

Just to address/confirm a few issues, the BC commisares were in charge of the start line procedure not the organisers who were even told to make sure there was no commentary whilst all the riders started thus due to the numbers of classes meant there was no commentary for a some minutes. The gridding was their domain completely.

Another reason why there was no commentary for a short period was a slight glitch with the computer that Time laps had provided the commentator with.

There was a megaphone at the event offered but the commisares declined to use it

In terms of numbers and overtaking opportunities, the course was designed with an expectation of 400 riders an increase on last year, it certainly was not expected to get over 500. Due to this there were large numbers of riders on  the course and if we had anticipated this we may have tried to put a few more fire road/road sections in to make for easier overtaking , however the lap length was over 5 miles which on the plus side that meant the laps were taking longer so less chance of lapping riders on the negative side it meant some of the slower riders were still on the track when the next batch of racers started.

However looking at the results I don’t think there is any dispute that the winners would have still been the same and given the start was wide  and open there was plenty of opportunity to get in the front of your category prior to the single track and certainly on the hills there was opportunity to overtake.

For photos of the event go to http://mikeconway/jalbum.net

Can I thank everyone for turning up and of course all the volunteers from the club and the SMBC for making the event so successful

I have a number of licences which were left at the event if anyone wants me to post these back send a SAE to WDMBC –SXC , 29 cleveland road Uxbridge UB8 2DR  and I will get them back to you otherwise I should be at the Gorrick on Sunday and will bring them along

Hope to see everyone at our next event the www.bucksoffroadsportive.co.uk on the 10th Mayy or at Crow Hill for round 2

Quick update on the course , nice and dry as of today(Fri), lap length is spot on 5 miles  and the great bermed downhills are all in, a lot of single track but there are plenty of overtaking places.Start is in the reverse direction of last year but once again on tarmac before grass and then narrowing into the 1st bit of single track.Lots of hardstanding for the car park and a few showers will not effect the course any great shakes it will be fast !

Any reason the Gorrick doesnt get its own forum here?

Is it not true that there can no longer be any doubt about which

1) is the best series
2) has the best venues
3) has best mix of PROPER xc features
4) has the best attendance, audience
5) etc...

What a shame it cannot get on the national scene. then again, maybe thats not a bad thing? Yet tell me why?

Robin

Without knocking the Gorrick I reckon the Southern Series are up there or even supersede the Gorricks  , certainly a number of completely different  excellent race venues and  some awesome courses around a much wider geographical area than the Gorrick.

If we are talking about the best courses -what about Newnham Park which I reckon would be most peoples fave and there are many more Bordon , Ash , Erlestoke which all have their supporters and no doubt some great Northern courses

If I was being highly critical due to the no of riders there was to much single track on Sunday at Tunnel Hill and it should have interspersed with some more overtaking opportunities, although this did not effect my own ride apart from catching a few riders in the class which started ahead who were hesistant in moving over despite being in the back hallf of their race.

The Southern series at every round has prize presentations on the day so those that have managed to win can have their moment of glory and jump up on the podium not the case in the Gorrick apart from the final round and although not  having the same numbers as th Gorrick they do IMO have a better atmosphere and with the numbers gradually increasing this is only going to get better.

As for the long debate about BC -yes they do not appear to do a lot for MTB racing but we need to support them if British mountain Biking is going to ever hit the  heady heights on the world stage , also they are working at a ranking/class system thats works on ability levels rather than age levels which once again IMO is to be supported.

Have to disagree the taping at the race was good ,unfortunately someone who had done the previous years course decided that he wanted to go the same way again despite a change in the route, once he had ridden through the tape a number of people on his wheel followed him. No one else reported any probs with the tape especially in the earlier races. There was a motorcycle marshall going round constantly checking throughout the day. As a  venue used by other MOP this venue as most are always going to be prone to the usual knob who thinks it is fun to rip the tape down for whatever reason. We will be using more arrows this year so hopefully you will not have any probs this year and the course will be open for pre riding from about 8:30 depending on people taking the tape down o/night

If you go the gallery page of the www.westdraytonmbc.co.uk site there are some pictures from previous events, course is dry at the moment and is on well drained tracks so even if wet mud should not be a problem, tad under 3 miles a lap, mixture of fire roads and sweet single track with a few roots to catch out the nervous, good for spectators as the race comes into the arena area twice a lap, ideal for the clydesdale rider with no climbing of any note
Entries are still coming in likely to be a good field already got over 50 from the Beyond Mountain Bikes/WDMBC team with Rob Lee amongst the other entries in the Single speed class.Anyone wanting to enter over the net can e-mail me a form and I can send them a paypal invoice

The event has racing for all abilities and includes a beginners race with prizes donated for the ladies class by www.dirtdivas.co.uk ,other sponsors include the www.thefeedstation.com, Eat Natural, The Crown Public House-Cowley ,Warp Systems and as usual a crate of beer is on offer for the winner of the singlespeed class.

One of the problems the West Drayton ran into when using Ash ranges is that due to it being a SSSI that permission would not be granted to use the cct between March and the end of September, so that really rules it out for a summer series.

As Steve said car parking is also a problem and in the past one of the locals has not taken kindly to MTB racing there and has taken down a lot of the course marking.

Ash is a great riding venue and is steeped in history having been the venue for MTB racing since way back in the late eighties and we have been looking at using it again this October depending on how busy the calendar is and deciding on a format which would prove popular

In the mean time the wdmbc/beyond events for 2009 will be Black Park March 15th, Bordon 26th April and the Bucks classic May 10th, hope to see you all at them.

Forecast is looking good for this Sundaythe  21st September which is the date of the final round of the Southern Mountain Bike  series, organised by the West Drayton MBC in conjunction with their long time sponsors Beyond Mountain Bikes.
After the bad weather over most of this season the organising team are hoping that once again they will be blessed with Sun which has been the order of the day for the Black Park XC races and the Bucks classic they organised earlier in the year.
However rain or shine the race venue at Oxney Moss, Bordon  is still looking good and is a venue that’s stands up well to inclement weather draining well and has the added bonus of large hardstanding for the car park and start /finish areas.
Time Laps will be in attendance for the computerised lap scoring ,1st gear cycles will have a trade stand for any last minute purchases and the race will have commentary and a podium/bubbly  for the prize winners.
There is racing for all classes including an open and fun event and although the event is British Cycling sanctioned and carries ranking points, riders do not need to be licence holders to ride.
Lap distance is close to 5miles and features some superb undulating single track as well as some fast wide overtaking stretches and racing is expected to be tight as riders battle for points to decide the overall series positions and the honour of being a Southern MTB champion.

As Mike says only a week to go for pre-entry, however there will be entry on the day but why not save a few quid and pre-enter as it makes it a lot easier for the organsers.
The course drains well and is holding up well despite the recent heavy rain and with the large hardstanding for the car park there are no worries about getting bogged down entering or exiting the venue.

Qoute
I'm not sure turning the last round of the southerns into an NPS would be quite as easy as when the Nat Champs were run as the same race as NPS 4 last year. Those were both national events, and would have had the same level of facilities.

The Southern Series already have time laps booked for the computerised results which is the biggest bug bear . Don't think the numbers are going to effect the 1st aid/catering and rest of the infra structure which is already in place, would just need someone to co -ordinate the NPS results and sort the overalls out in there series. Seems to me a better bet than cancelling a round all together , not ideal I know but just a better compromise.

IMO
Once you have committed to something you should if at all possible carry that commitment out, cancelling the final round because your goig to make a loss is out of order and obviously impacts on a number of riders. If the costs of this particular circuit were so high why did they decide to hold it there in the first place! If the costs of this circuit and venue were so prohibitive why was a new venue not found, yes it would have been a pain and probably in a different part of the country but sure that is better than cancelling a round. Thetford racing promote other events why could they not use the profits they make out of those to offset the possible downfall or even down size some of the infra structure.
The final round of the Southern series is at Bordon a week later this could have easily doubled up as the final round of the Nat points surely that would have been a better option than to cancel the last round completely.
Did anyone think of approaching the Gorrick to incorporate the event into one of their races and surely some blame lies with BC could they have not helped in offsetting some of the anticipated losses

The final of the Southern series for the second year running is to be held on the 21st September at Bordon Hampshire this proved a popular race venue last year and the organisers having been working hard to design a new course for 2008. All the fave bits are going to be kept in with the additions of some new single track and despite the recent heavy rain a visit to the venue last night showed that even if it keeps raining it should stand up well. Lap length will be approx 5 miles and it starts on a long tarmac straight giving all those who have not been gridded a good chance of getting to the front before the single track.
Organisers the West Drayton Mountain bike club are hoping after the good weather for their last two events the Bucks Classic and the Black Park XC races that another Sunny day will be in order for the day. Usual parking facilities available on the large hard standing parade ground, 1st gear cycles in attendance for those last minute goodies and  the Field Kitchen for refreshments..

The best of all 3 12/24hrs by a mile, had to convince a few from the club to take part after last years course at The Cotswolds but all 20 riders from the Beyond/West Drayton MBC , novices to full on racers loved the course, thanks Martin and see you next year Chris Denman
