Waking up in the morning is never easy; I think that’s just a fact of life. I’m not sure there are many ways to make it much easier other than getting up when ever you feel like it. There is however many ways to make waking up so much harder, fatigue, dark mornings and early starts are all things that us full time cyclists and full time real life people have to deal with.

Surprisingly I have discovered something that really can make that rigmarole of leaving the warmth and comfort just that little easier.

The concept is simple. Waking to a dark room does nothing for you, you open your eyes to be greeted by a dark room, it’s to easy to close your eyes again and role back over, Thus for missing that early morning training slot!!

However the Lumie is a bedside alarm clock and lamp. You set your alarm to the desired wake up time and then leave the Lumie to work its magic. The light gradually comes on 30 minutes before the alarm sounds. This increasing light simulates a sunrise and you wake feeling so much more alive.

So here’s the technical jargon on how it actually impacts your body from Lumie:

Bodyclock is the original wake-up light, also called a dawn simulator. It wakes you gradually with increasing natural light. This is a signal for your body to ease production of sleep hormones (e.g. melatonin) and increase those that help you get up and go (e.g. cortisol). Wake-up lights help to keep your sleep cycle on track, boosting mood, energy and productivity levels all day.

Your probably thinking this all sounds a little to easy and believe me a month ago I did too. However after 3 weeks of using the Lumie I can honestly say it makes a considerable difference on waking up. Don’t expect a miracle, nobody wants to get out of bed when you’re tired and you can here the wind and rain battering on the window.

On many occasions I have woken naturally as my bedroom has become fully illuminated usually 4-5 minutes before the alarm sounds. The light has allowed me to wake easier and feel a lot less drowsy. My morning routine is a lot smoother and I am forgetting fewer things, as I am more awake and alert in the morning.

Its like having the sun next to you bed now!!

I have been using the Lumie 30. This is the entry-level model and is reasonably basic. It comes with the sunrise feature, which you can change to either a 30-minute cycle or 15. It also has a sun down feature to help with falling asleep however I have had no need to try this function. The light is however a little fiddly to set up and use. It only has 3 buttons to operate all the functions so can become a little confusing. I have found however that I have quickly got used to it and now it’s no longer such a problem.

To conclude I would certainly say the Lumie has had a very positive effect on my mornings. Lumie offer a 30 day free trial if purchased from there website, I think that speaks for its self.
