SWXC Champs - A perfect day! (results)

Sunday’s scorching sunshine wasn’t the only heat at the South West regional champs. Hot racing was the order of the day in every sense. The new course and venue certainly got a thumbs-up from the exhausted riders retreating to the shade after their races.

Starting a hundred metres from the Mendip Outdoors’ ski station and newly spruced up café, within ear shot of the squealing children on the tobogganing run we had all the facilities a tired mtb’er could wish for (think real coffee, proper loos, decent food, adrenalin videos on big screens, icecream…).



Under blue sky and in perfect condition the track laid out by Rich Hobbs and the Bike City crew did not disappoint. A mix of fresh cut singletrack, decade forgotten DH trails, farmers’ droves and miners’ tracks combined for a ride that tested skill, power and stamina. I won’t describe the whole thing, just make sure you get there next time: some very tricky A-lines, fast flowing forest, steep kicks, lung bursting climbs and drifting double track.

Rob Barker was lurking around the course, making use of the perfect light to take the sort of race photos to make your work colleagues go “Ooooh I knew you rode your bike a lot but I didn’t know you were that good!” – check them out.



Races featured a great mix of riders from enthusiastic irregular racers to the every weekend die hard competitors. Some very well prepared athletes contested the podiums in every category, winners leaving with the Regional Champion’s title.



Huge thanks to: the venue, the organisers, Bike City, Rob Barker and everyone that raced and made the day a great success. See you next year (or before if Rich gets his way….).
