Our claim of it being the flattest cross country course in the World has not been challenged and its probably one of the fastest too so its great fun whizzing through the singletrack. We have been busy over winter widening the tracks first for our cross race, then with the first round of the Southern XC in mind we have widened it some more to allow for easy overtaking. So it should be even faster than previous years where a sub 10 minute lap was only possible by the very best Elites. For anyone planning to ride the Southern round in April its a good opportunity to learn the singletrack although this will be only half the full lap, the other half has all the big hills. It will also be good training for anyone riding the first BMBS at Sherwood as it will be a very similar flat out effort and a good chance to see how your body copes with racing where there is little chance for recovery.
So back to bike preparation, despite the recent rain Checkendon is damp but remains rideable, the ground is flinty and the top layer of mud has mostly been scrubbed off over nearly 20 years of racing. A good all round sturdy tyre is what you need for grip and puncture protection on the exposed stones, roots and slippery corners. Mud tyres will only be a benefit on the grassy section on the field if its really wet and muddy, semi-slicks are not an option here till its gets dusty about May or June.
