As always the Exposure Lights Night of the Knobbly Tread race produced some close fast racing across the categories as everyone vied for the excellent prizes on offer from headline sponsors Exposure/USE and the additional prizes from West Drayton MBC club sponsor The Specialized Concept Store Ruislip on a superb fast course at Black Park. In the open race it turned out to be a clean sweep for the promoting club as Roger Fowkes using his local knowledge of the track stormed around the 1st lap to open a gap on the next quartet of Sam Edwards WDMBC, David Bone VC Rapheal, Tom Newman and Chris Try WDMBC with 6th place rider Paul Miller WDMBC a bit off the pace and looking out of it, lap after lap Fowkes rode like a metronome as he steadily crept away from the chasing quartet building up an unassailable lead, behind him the four chasers who had been swapping positions throughout the laps had stayed together until the penultimate lap when Newman was the first to drop off the back, followed by Bone and Try, with Edwards now safely in second it looked like Chris Try would hold onto 3rd but the pace judgement and stamina of Paul Miller saw him make a remarkable recovery and come from nowhere to pip Try on the line. In the Womens open event Fay Cripps Southdown Velo had a trouble free ride to repeat her win of 2015. In the vets race it looked like it was all going to come to down to a sprint finish as the 4th lights duo of Roki Read and Duncan Hards battled it out with Paul White Aylesbury CC who were glued together for the first 3 laps with Stefano De Tomaso some way behind in 4th but at the end of the 4 lap race it was Read who was first across the line with no sign of either White or Hards and De Tomaso was the next rider in. Then Andrew Bocking came in to take the final podium place as news filtered back that unluckily Hards had snapped a chain and White had punctured ruing their hopes of victory. In the veterans ladies, Gosia McPherson took advantage of her local knowledge to take another home win for the promoting club a feat repeated in the grand vets female class by Sue Tebbs. In the men’s grand veterans race Simon Slater had high hopes of repeating his success of 2015 and was always in contention but as hard as he tried he could not shake off Dave Wadsworth Beeline cycles and in a sprint to the finishline it was Wadsworth who took glory. However the promoting club were not finished and in the fun event comeback rider Tim Smith riding competitively for the first time for a number of years took another home victory and was joined on the podium by Mark Busbridge and Adam James Raeburn. All in all another successful promotion from the promoting club the West Drayton MBC with a big thanks to Bucks County Council for the use of the venue.
