Thick / thin teeth 'mesh' with your chains shape delivering much greater chain holding capability than a standard ring. This is the same principle as the SRAM XX1 single ring.

For many riders the use of a chain-guide will not be needed when paired with a clutch type derailleur though this will depend on exact setup (correct chain tension, suspension travel etc) and type of riding (DH riding with long travel frames). Test your socks off on these, if you still think you need a chain guide to be 100% safe we sell some light ones in the XCRacer shop.
