The first race of the summer series, that explains why it was pouring with rain and just 5C on Sunday morning.  Trudging, through the mud, with heavy camera kit and an injured shoulder, I have to admit to a moment of doubt as to why I'd bothered.  All forgotten when Rob Smith gave me a big hug at the start.  At least until I realised he doesn't actually like me he was just freezing cold despite six layers of bike kit!

Despite the cold, rain and icy wind the largest number of riders ever turned up to battle it out around the extremely, tough muddy course.  Well there really could be only one theme for a set of photos from this event.  You've guessed it, it just had to be mud….

Neither was there any mercy for the younger riders in Race 2.  They slogged it out round a large part of the main course.  A valiant effort, especially for those with wheels so small they barely appeared above the mud line at all….

Most importantly, 'thank you' to Maddie, Jay, Jane and Rob for all the organisation beforehand and throughout the event.  A job not made any easier by spending the day trying to hold down the registration tent!  Also credit to the other support staff and marshals for surviving the extreme conditions.  Photographic thanks to Russell, trying to get a stand-out, headline picture just hasn't been the same without him.  Well worth getting a wet foot for, especially as it was his foot and not mine!  And finally, I have a confession.  It was me that stepped backwards and squashed one of the cones used for the skills course.  You could try taking the replacement cost out of Snapper Chick's wages if you like!
