Name:
Lee Williams

Team/Club:
Team Wiggle

Category:
Elite XC

2011 bike:
Focus Raven 1.0

2011 results:
Top Brit at Hadleigh International Olympic Test Event, Bronze at British National Champs, 2nd at BMBS Final in Plymouth

Short Bio:
Been Racing since 1999 as a first year youth rider.  Won my first Welsh Champs as a 2nd year youth and have no less than 20 Welsh titles to my name.  Currently hold the record for number of Senior Mtb Welsh wins and all consecutive.

I have withdrawn from a Sports Science Degree after passing the 2nd year to focus on training ready for the 2012 Mtb season.  Main 2012 goals are to crack the World Cups and get into the top 30, get selected for the Olympics and win some races!

During any spare time that I have I spend on the go with the family, walking up the mountain, listening to music, playing the guitar and sea fishing!

Questions:

First race experience?
Schmoo's Welsh Series, never been to a cycle race in my life, turned up on my downhill bike but quickly decided to race my dad's bike because it looked more like everyone else's.  Expectations were not to come last.  If I came last but one I'd have called it a good race, but ended up coming 8th in the two lap 1hr race held at a classic BMBS venue.Margam Park!  Hooked!!

What's the funniest thing a spectator has shouted at you?
My 3 year old daughter (Izzy) seeing me take a stack in Dalby Forest where she went on to shout "come on dad man up and shake it offfff" how can you not get up!  Other than that I do have good memories of the Canadian World Cup where the spectators gathered around one of the key climbs with start sheets, therefore knowing the names of the riders just by looking at the number board.  Not having the best race riding somewhere near the back of the field and as I reach the climb I hear a full squad of Canadian cheer leaders shout "gimee an 'L' gimee an 'E' gimee an 'E'.come on LEEEEE!" that did make me smile.

Favourite motivational tune?
Normally the last bit of music I hear before a race is more often than not songs from Disney films which are always stuck in my head when racing, but other than that I listen to pretty much anything ever made in regards to music, but I am quite enjoying 'Jessie J' at the moment.

What do you look forward to most at the end of a race?
The Podium.lol.  Well I'd like to say my recovery drink but everybody knows it's the KFC on the drive home!

Toughest competitor you've raced against?
Probably Oli Beckingsale as he never lets up an always gives 100% at every race and his 100% happens to be quite fast!

Favourite race course?
Of all time would have to be Eastridge Nationals 1999 or Houffalize WC 2001, but more recently I loved the 2011 BMBS final round at Newnham Park.

What's the best bit of advice you've been given?
"You're all equal on that start line" - Steve Williams

Best bit of kit or training aid ever bought?
Back in 2001 I bought a cateye cycle simulator turbo trainer which has seen way too many hours of hard abuse and I would be completely lost without it and only this year did it see the skip!  Other than that I'm always pretty impressed with my Exposure lights!

29 or 26?
Never tried a 29'er so will have to say 26, but I'm quite short anyway so would probably look like I'm on a penny farthing if I did ride a 29'er.

Gentle recovery or aggressive rest?
I can't keep still or stay off my bike so will have to say gentle recovery.
