The search for a maintenance free mtb is a dream of mine, but we're still a fair few years off an electronic XTR internal hub gear system, so anything that'll keep my drivechain shifting smoothly for longer is a good thing. Enter stage left 'Gore Ride-On' cables. You've probably seen them in your local bike shop and have also probably baulked at the price compared to £3 for a standard inner wire and £3.00 for a metre of standard outer cable (yes, they really are that cheap north of the watford Gap).
Apparently, to ensure top performance, teams racing the World Cup circuit replace their cables and chains after every race. Follow that same principle at every muddy UK race and the cost would soon start to add up. With Ride-On cables, you fit them at the start of the season and if you spent the time following the instructions to fit the sealed system it will work flawlessly all year. With SRAM now speccing the system on their top groupsets, it'll be interesting to see if any other manufacturers copy Orbea by disposing of the outer cable altogether and using special guides on the frame for the wire and liner instead.
In use like many top products, they just get on working without any fuss, with consistent light and smooth shifting through dust, grime, mud, ice and jet-washing. Only downside is that the little red tab on each cable highlighting to everyone that you've blown £40 on a set of cables soon disappears!
