Now that we've had the best of summer in the UK, it might be time to start thinking about how to fend off the inevitable mid ride shower and brutal northerly wind.

In the past I have been drawn to the more expensive end of waterproof jackets for cycling; goretex treated, breathable, taped seams, Velcro cuffs all among the infinite list of attributes gracing these garments.  Even with the technology available there is a certain inevitability with riding in the rain - you are going to get wet at some point.

I initially purchased the Mistlite Shell as it meets the FRA (fell runners association) regulations for when waterproofs are compulsory equipment during races.  However, it has subsequently proved useful for off and on road cycling when the weather has (frequently) turned foul this year.

The best summary of this jacket is no frills, which is to be expected for £60. The list of features being:

1. Chest and hip pockets
2. Foldable hood
3. Reflective strips

However the most useful thing about this jacket is that it only weighs 210g and it folds into the hip pocket with a buckle and strap to hold round your waist.  It packs very small, with room to store some gels/trail tools or if you'd rather not wear it round your waist the small size fits easily into a rear pocket.

Waist pack is useful if your pockets are completely full, but may be a fashion step too far for some…

As a functional waterproof it does very well in holding off the water, beads appear quickly and it runs off.  It soon becomes apparent that the moisture will rise from within; as there is limited breathability built in to the material although a full-length zip helps accommodate some airflow.  For this reason the jacket is best suited, and indeed designed, for showers and rides where you won't be wearing it the whole time.  Without spending significantly more than £60 you will struggle to balance waterproof and breathability.

Well fit with an extended rear to cover a bit of road spray

During use, my medium sized version fitted snugly and didn't act like a wind brake, particularly helpful when on the road bike to reduce drag.  The wrist grippers are not adjustable but the strong elastic didn't cause any problems when worn on top of a number of layers or otherwise.

In summary, I like this jacket.  It works well for its designated purpose and when the weather turns worse I warm up the turbo trainer.  An advantage for some will be it's beneficial crossover as a running jacket while an advantage for all will be its low price.  Its downside is the lack of breathability but as an overall package it performs very well for it's specific purpose.
