The first Night of the Knobbly Tread event promoted by West Drayton MBC was a great success, moving away from the normal endurance night races this was fast, furious short racing round a circuit that was bone dry. In fact for the first 3 laps there was a leading break of 5 riders that could not be split and resembled a road race, the lead group containing Matt Craner (Beyond/WDMBC), Simon Ernest (AW cycles), Geoff Beetham (Retro Bike), Matt Lewis (XC Racer )and Lewis King (Beeline Cycles) all dicing for the lead on the fast forest trails and tight single track. A little further back the promoting clubs Jon Pierce was holding off fellow team mate Rob Jackson! Into the 4th Lap and Matt Lewis who had taken his moment of glory to lead over the finish line on the previous lap was not in the group as they came round, he was to have suffered a ripped tyre and his race was over.

Into the last lap and the lead group had gone down to 3 with the absent Lewis as there was now a little bit of daylight between them and Craner, Craner was still very much in touch though as he put in a massive effort to close on the leading trio and when they inexplicably took a wrong turn each following the wheel in front, Craner although sportingly shouting to them to warn them of their error he put the hammer down and managed to take full advantage of the leaders mistake to take overall victory and win the veterans prize. Next to finish was Geoff Beetham for the open win followed by Simon Ernest 2nd open and Lewis King taking the runners up spot in the veterans. Rob Jackson took advantage of Jon Pierce crashing heavily to take the final podium in the vets race. In the Women's event Jackie Roberts made it a vets double for the promoting club matching Craners efforts whilst in the open Maddie Horton (Team Certini) had a big enough lead to crash get up, stop for some bike adjustments and still take the top honours beating Roz Giles into second and Karen Aldis 3rd. The open winners walked away with an impressive prizes both winning Exposure Lights and a Land Rover mobile phone donated by Payphones.

The fun event saw the male leaders producing times that would have placed them highly in the open race and at the end of the 3 lap race the victory was taken by James Hyde followed by Dave Turner (Pitsford Cycles) in 2nd and Tom Wright in 3rd. In the fun ladies event the winner was Emily Iredale followed by Lucy Cash and Sian Brooks.

Thanks to all from Buckinghamshire county Council and all the sponsors, Beyond Mountain Bikes / Exposure lights / Party Lights for their assistance with the event at this great venue which proves you can have some spectacular racing even without any elevation to play with.
