Over 160 people took part in the first annual offroad duathlon held at Ashton Court on Sunday 16th October. The Run Rider, supported by VDO Cycle Computers is Bristol's only duathlon and offered competitors two race distances combining running and mountain biking in the picturesque Ashton Court Estate on the outskirts of Bristol.
Using a variety of trails within the park, organisers put together a tough and challenging but accessible running and cycling course which included the popular blue MTB trail which has recently been rebuilt to wide spread acclaim. The shorter Standard Run Rider race covered 29km and locally based Simon Thornton put in a convincing win in the Solo Male category, ahead of Kit Stokes and Matthew Hamilton-James. In the Solo Female category, Kirsty Eastwood lead from the start and finished a good 6mins clear of second place Rebekah Scott and Lisa Pritchard. In the Veteran Male race, Brett Flook and Marcus Williams battled throughout the race, but William's faster mountain biking proved too much for Flook with Williams taking the win by 1.45mins.
The 43km solo male Classic race was a very exciting and incredibly close battle throughout the two and a half hours of racing. Luke Grenfell-Shaw took an early 2min lead in the running leg, before second placed Lee Rankin and then Iain Payne took over the lead in the three lap mountain bike stage, before the final battle between all three in the final 5km run. In the end, only 40secs separated the first three finishers, so it was a very close race indeed! In the female race, experienced mountain biker Maddie Horton from Plymouth lead from the start and maintained that position right until the end, unchallenged by second and third place. Her husband, Jay Horton repeated the pattern by leading from the start in the Veteran Solo category to win by a clear 8mins, and also recorded the fast time on the course for the whole race. Big thanks to the race supporters, including VDO Cycle Computers, OMM, Moti running shops, 220 Triathlon, For Goodness Shakes (for helping competitors recover after the event), Zero G and Out of Hand.
