Apparently if you're heading out on an expedition with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, your kitbag has to include 'Woolpower' garments or you ain't leaving base camp. Now I'm not a convert to merino wool (and just the thought of a 'Sportswool' jersey in summer brings me out in a rash on my non-bio only skin), but the quest for warm(er) winter training rides has led me to these products of the Swedish manufacturer 'Woolpower'. Based in Östersund, where it gets pretty damn cold, they developed their Ullfrotté Original fabric long before the merino revival.

What makes it unique? They've managed to weave a terry loop on the inner face of the fabric. This minimizes the amount of wool touching the skin (reducing itchiness) and maximizes the amount of air trapped (for toasty warmth). It also copes with a wide range of temperature conditions, so I didn't get hot - start sweating then get cold. I was pessimistic about the helmet cap and it's Blackadder appearance, but once the temperature dropped I gave it the benefit of the doubt and have been really impressed. The long back prevents any draughts down the back of your neck, while the fabric is thin enough to fit underneath your usual helmet, isn't itchy and keeps your ears warm without blocking out traffic noise. As for the socks, they have jumped above Woolie Boolies to the coveted no. 1 position in the sock drawer. Praise indeed!

Score: Runner Up
