After much consideration it was decided that to aid his Olympic hopes our South African star, Rourke Croeser would fly to Mauritius for the African Continental Championships. The risk would be the extreme amount of travel going into two important World Cups but with 200 UCI points on offer and a potential Olympic place there was little doubt that it was a risk worth taking.
Rourke flew out to luxury five star accommodation where he would be able to relax with the other South African athletes before the race on the small island on Sunday.
Coming off the back of a good result in the Houffalize World Cup and one of the best races of his career in the UCI category 1 race in Stoumont, Rourke was confident of a good ride and a top result. Unlike previous years this race would be a combined event with Under 23's and Seniors together in one Elite race.
A good start saw Rourke taking the race to Phillip Buys who was the favourite on the day with Burry Stander choosing not to make the flight. It became clear very early on though that the travel had taken a little too much and Rourke would only manage to "ride" the race rather than racing at his normal high tempo. In true Rourke fashion though, he dug in deep to record a 4th place finish and 1st under 23. This came with over 100 points and kept his Olympic hopes alive.
