A truly fitting end to the Series at our home venue of Checkendon. Rain and sunshine made the course a real test of handling skills and fitness. Youth racer Sam Culverwell scored the fastest lap of 15:29 in the dry early race with Elite Scott Chappell riding a 15:35 in the wet final race. The course is nicely set for the XC Rampage races and will likely be very similar.

The Elite categories were a little empty at this round with Phillip Pearce at Val di Sole World Cup and Cat Ross resting having already won the Series. So it was left to Heidi Gould (Merida) and a returning Emily Iredale (Torq) to battle out the Female race. Together all race Heidi managed to power away on the finish straight to win by three seconds. Hannah Attenburrow (Pedal2Pedal) scored her first podium in third.

Ade Lansley (pedalon) and Scott Chappell (Behind the Bikeshed) were both up for the Series win if either punctured. After racing together for 4 laps it was Scott who was unlucky, tearing a tyre on the flints. Ade cruised the last two laps and only held off James Roe by 20 seconds. Mike Serafin rounded off the podium some 1.5 minutes back.

It was great to see Paul Lloyd back racing Expert with a very impressive scar after injury at the last round. Paul didn't quite have the form after 4 weeks off the bike but still managed 6th place and took second in the Series. Will Taylor completed a clean sweep of wins to win the Series (another Phil Pearce in the making?)

The Grand Vets races went according to plan with Carol Tilley sealing the Series win from Maggie Maundrell and Mark Chadbourne taking another clean sweep. Danielle Petersmann sealed the Vet Female Series with a second to Teresa Jackson on the day. Paul Hopkins completed another clean sweep for the Vet Male Series title with Rob Purcell just pipping Stuart King to second despite pulling out on the day.

We have to give a special mention for Rosie Brown who was leading the Sport Female race when Harriet Dodd in the Junior race crashed in front of her and badly cut her cheek. Rosie stopped and rode with Harriet back to the medics eventually taking third in the race. Both Rosie and Harriet won their Series titles despite the fall.

The Sport Male race decided the series long battle between David Pusey, Sam Edwards and Paul Miller, with them riding in close formation for four laps and David taking the sprint for the line. Chris Rothwell finally managed to beat Oliver Stean in the Junior Male race but it wasn't enough to deny Oliver the Series title.

The Youth, Juvenile and Under 13, 11 and 9 races have seen a big increase in racers this year which looks good for the future. Emily Ashwood, Sam Culverwell, Megan MacMahon, Thomas Timberlake, Charlotte McGreevy, Conor Stain, Lucy Allsop, Ben Coppola, Tulsi Bakrania and Peter Carpenter will all be names to watch in the future.

Thanks to everyone for coming to the final race to say goodbye. We've had a great time and we hope you've enjoyed it too. Don't worry - there will still be lots of racing in the South and new organisers are coming forward all over the place.

SMBC will still be organising the XC Rampage races at Checkendon this Autumn so we hope to see you there. We will keep you posted of new races via the SouthernXC Facebook page and the SMBC mailing list.
