Wasing never fails to provide close exciting races and the battles at the Southern Championships were worthy of the titles awarded. A new mega drop added a 'bottle' requirement to the racers skill set and extended and new features all around the course kept everyone smiling. Only two broken collarbones and one concussion kept the medics busy!

Phillip Pearce (Banjo) continued his dominance of the Elite category with another confident win. Phil put the hammer down from the start leaving Ade Lansley (pedalon) and Jody Crawforth (Hargroves) to battle for second and third. Ade held onto second until the final lap when Jody, last years Southern Champ, caught and passed him.

Cat Ross (WDMBC) battled back from third to beat Maddie Horton (Pilgrim Flyers) and Maxine Filby (Sigma Sport) in the Elite Female race.

Will Taylor (SouthDowns Bikes) took his second Expert win over Paul Lloyd and Simon Allard. There is a 20 year age gap between Will and Paul after the Masters category was dropped.

Jenny Thompson (MountainTrax) took the Expert Female win from Sarah Allen.

Jared Linden won the Sport title from Sam Edwards and David Pusey, with Rosie Brown winning the Sport Female title.

Junior titles went to Oliver Stean and Harriett Dodd.

Steve Calland (SouthDowns Bikes) gave Vets Paul Hopkins and Lewis King a challenge today, holding the lead group for 4 laps until Paul Hopkins smoothly pulled away on the final lap for the win.

Daniellle Petersmann took another Vet Female win.

Mark Chadbourne and Carol Tilley won the Grand Vet titles again.

Andy Roberts took the Super Vets title from Gary Wallbridge.

A special mention for Ben Moore who took third in the Open race. Ben is an Elite Downhill racer, recovering from a knee operation and was riding a massive Giant Trance with flats. Ben was 8th at Round 2 and was amazed at his third in only his second xc race. On a proper cross country bike he'd surely be a contender in Sport. Dean Camier won the Open race from Marc Clothier.

The series reaches the half way point now with the next round returning to an old and much loved track at Bordon. Designed by the ACU team, the course will feature all the old favourites trails and some new sections. See you on 30th May!
