Grey, miserable and windy is the only way to describe last Sunday morning. Misty rain all morning made the course slippery but still fast and fun. Everyone loved the flowing trails and trenches and lap times were spot on target for all categories. Fingers crossed we get to go back next year.
A good attendance with 345 racers meant some close racing and some surprises on the podiums with lots of new and old faces in second spot.
With Phil Pearce at the World Cup in Germany, Ade Lansley (pedalon) resumed his place on the top step of the Elite podium. A great battle between George Budd (Pivot), Simon Ernest (Renvale) and James Roe (Guernsey Velo) saw James triumph on the last lap to claim his first second place ever.
The Elite Famale race was again taken by Cat Ross (WDMBC) but a fantastic ride from Heidi Gould got her first ever Elite podium.
Matt MacDonald took a deserved second place in Expert Male beating Paul Lloyd but behind the usual winner Will Taylor.
Another surprise second place was taken in the Grand Vets, with Andy Cracknell (pedalon) relishing the conditions and beating usual runner up Nigel Brown. Mark Chadbourne remained unstoppable at the front with a 3 minute lead. Jackie Roberts returned from Round 1 to take the Grand Vet Female win from Carol Tilley.
Rosie Brown took another win in the Sport Female race and it was nice to see Emily Iredale back on the podium in second after her baby last year. The Sport Male race produced one of the best sprints so far this year as Sam Edwards pipped David Pusey for the win.
Holly MacMahon and Oliver Stean managed to get away from revision duties to win the Junior races. While The Wadsworth girls won the Youth, Juvenile and Under 13 Female races. Daniel Tullett won the Junior Male race, with Thomas Timberlake taking Juvenile Male and Patrick Ridge taking Under 13 Male.
With the big guns missing from the Vet Male race, Robert Purcell fought a tight race with Sam Humphreys and Stuart King to take the win. Caroline Goward showed up to spoil Danielle Petersmann's clean sweep of wins in the Vet Female race.
The series has a short break now when we return with last years favourite venue, Porridgepot Hill on 28th June. Chris Peacock, course builder from last year and long time Open racer, will lay on the usual tough climbs and flowing trails. With only two rounds to go in the Series, the Porridgepot race will be crucial in deciding the final standing. See you then!
