How did I get here?

OK it's a question we've probably asked ourselves on more than one occasion:

• At the alter
• Waking up in some random gutter.
• On the start line
• Thursday night B&Q car park in the rain in December
• Staring at an empty blog post on my computer screen.

So how did I end up being a blogger on the UK's premier XC racing website?

Well it's a long story. I used to race MotoX, badly, and one day decide I'd had enough, sold the motorbike and built a camper van with the plan to do some camping, walking and maybe a bit of cycling with my long suffering wife.   We camped a bit, rode a bit and; and this is where it all changed, I took part in the Newnham 90 in about 2004. That winter despite saying the idea of riding a bike in mid winter was ludicrous, there I was at the start line of the first Soggy of the year and that's how it started. Spending six months somewhere dusty in 2007 meant that on my return I could afford some thing a bit lighter and racier so I got a Giant XTC carbon and did a few more events.

Then last year I joined the RNRMCA and rode for their team in Mountain Mayhem, had another go at twentyfour12 and another trip round the Newnham 60 course and all the Soggy Bottom series. Some way through the year, Maddie Horton started posting up training sessions and I started attending them and then I started following her plan, well parts of it. So this year I've got a BC racing licence for the master's cat, a Spez Epic Marathon, the support of the Royal Navy Royal Marines Cycling Association and entries into most of the BMBS rounds, all the Fullysussed South West Series, Are You Tough Enough Enduro, Bristol Bike Fest and the 12hr solo cat of Twentyfour12, with goals of top 50 at the Nationals, top 20 regionally and not crashing and burning at my first 12hr solo effort.

I will be blogging on the races I attend, more "view from the back" than the cut and thrust of the pointy end; the training I am trying to keep to and the myriad of things that occur to me as I ride around.  I hope to entertain, maybe inform and who knows inspire.

And the first piece of advice I have to deliver: Don't drink Margaritas on a 'school night'.
