Shred Classic Bicycle Race

It was a tough few hours in the rain for Shred's first City Classic cycle race last Wednesday evening..  The weather was so summery that it was a struggle to keep the umbrella from turning inside out. Despite the weather over 50 riders rose to the challenge of the 1 KM loop laid out on Plymouth's historic Hoe.  The men's event was split into two 30 min heats followed by a 20 min final whilst the women's event was a single 20 min race to the line.

As I'd read the information wrong I'd convinced Mrs XCwanabe that it would be an hours racing starting at 1800  I wasn't Mister popular when it turned out that practice was from 1800 and racing was going to take longer than an hour. It took the offer of a Captain Jasper's Jasperiser to placate her.

Those brave or stupid enough to spend a wet Aug evening spectating on the Hoe were treated to some class racing with riders ignoring the sketchy conditions and racing full on. Their level of commitment was ably demonstrated in the women's race by one of the Mule Bar team who went crashing into the barrier on the last corner in her attempt to make it into second.  Her meeting with the barrier meant that it was a straight drag to the line for second place between  Certini's Maddie Horton and WXC's Carla Haines as Allie Holland had disappeared into the distance from the off. Carla race plan of sitting out of trouble in the pack paid off as she was able to out drag Maddie taking second place by less than a wheels length.

The men's races weren't any less exciting with, unsurprisingly, a large number of Shred riders turning out as well as members of Team Certini- McCaulay, fellow members of the Royal Navy Royal Marine Cycling Association and several local cycling including Yogis putting in an appearance.

After two rounds and a final all I can tell you is someone in a yellow and red top won (I think), things had got that dark it was hard to tell.  I'm sure the results will be somewhere on line and that those who won something will know who they are.

Despite being wet to the skin, a good evenings racing and Mrs XCwanabe got her Tea and Jasperiser.
Roll on next year.
